GGD 1020


The GGD 1020 steel is one of the most common carbon steels used as steel for hardening with excellent value for money compared to most alloy steels for the same purpose. It has excellent plasticity and solderability. After carburizing is received, but has less capacity for hardening compared with the GGD 8620, for example.

It is used in mechanical components for use as gears, shafts, crankshafts, camshafts, guide pins, gear rings, columns, turnstiles, covers.


The steel GGD 1020 should be held at a minimum temperature of 900 ° C and a maximum of 1260ºC.


Annealing: The treatment should be done at temperatures between 850 – 870ºC for at least 1 hour for every 25 mm. Cool slowly in the oven.

Standardization: The treatment should be done at the temperature of 920 – 950 ° C for at least 1 hour for every 25 mm. Cool air. In special cases can use forced air.

Carburizing: the hardening process can be used in cash, gas or salt bath. The temperature should be between 900 – 925ºC. The hardening time should be controlled according to the carbon potential and the hardening depth specified. The cementation should be followed by improvement.

Quenching: Quenching can be performed directly after hardening simply by that decrease the temperature to 840 – 850 ° C, maintaining the time necessary to homogenize the temperature in cross section and cooling water. The quenching can also be performed after the carburizing components with cooling to room temperature. In this case, using the same procedure described.

Tempering: It must be done immediately after hardening when the temperature reaches about 70 ° C. The tempering is performed at temperatures between 150 – 200 ° C. The tempering there is no significant drop in hardness, but it ensures better resistance to fracture and the formation of surface cracks on grinding.

Nitriding: 0 This steel can be nitrided to increase the wear resistance of the surface hardening. For nitriding the component should be in the annealed condition. The nitriding process can be by gas or plasma. The presence of White Layer is indispensable, with a thickness exceeding 12 m.
